Building confidence and resilience through activity and mindfulness
Mini Mermaid Running Club offer after-school activity programmes for girls between the ages of 7 and 11.
The aim of the sessions is to build confidence and resilience through a combination of physical activity and constructive, educational group tasks.
The curriculum imparts an understanding the importance of exercise – not just for physical health but also for mental health.
Through discussions and structured opportunities for children to express themselves, they also encourage turning negative, self-critical thoughts into positive ones.
Their usual classes involve games and activities, themed discussions and running sessions, journaling and workouts.
Covid-19 has meant that the regular sessions are not possible. Instead, the Club have taken their programme online, in partnership with Full of Beans Fitness.
“When girls go through our programmes, they feel more confident, they feel more resilient, and they’re able to deal better with all the emotions and feelings that are going on in their heads.”
Hannah Corne, CEO, Mini Mermaid Running Club
This has allowed them to continue to encourage exercise, whilst creating a safe online space for girls to talk about their feelings and concerns about what’s going on right now.
They can talk, play some games, and realise that whatever location they’re in, they can get active.
