WheelPower’s annual ‘Time to Shine’ event took place at Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on 23 October 2017
Aiming to engage more young disabled from Barking & Dagenham, Greenwich, Hackney, and Waltham Forest the event facilitated a range of activities including wheelchair basketball, sitting volleyball, Short tennis and Golf, with thanks to Community Golf CIC, Motivate East and WheelPower.
This saw 100 youngsters get involved, and with many trying some of the activities for the first time, Time to Shine provided positive new experiences of physical activity and sport and potentially inspired regular participation in those activities in the future.
Richard Shaw, Founder and Director of Community Golf CIC, commented on the day and his Golf Activator team ensured that all those trying golf for the first time had a great experience. He said:
“The Time to Shine London event was a fantastic example of how we can use sport and physical activity to engage children with disabilities across the London growth boroughs in East London. It was incredibly humbling to give these young people the opportunity to participate in golf and this will be the start of their journey with Community Golf, as well as sport and physical activity generally.
“We were very proud to be a part of the event and we look forward to continuing to work with these groups at future sessions and events.”
