In light of the upcoming local elections, London Sport has produced a manifesto, calling on borough leaders and councillors to work in partnership with us to embed physical activity into the fabric of everyday life.
Our vision aligns with our broader Strategy: to tackle inactivity where it is highest, remove structural barriers and ensure every Londoner can live a longer, healthier and happier life through being active.
Building on the momentum of our 2024 Mayoral manifesto, this next phase focuses on the critical role of local government, and the practical actions boroughs can take to deliver change on the ground.
Embed movement into prevention, treatment and recovery, strengthening social prescribing and community-based care to reduce pressure on the NHS and improve outcomes.
Use the planning system to ensure new and existing developments support everyday movement, with access to safe, inclusive and well-connected spaces.
Safeguard facilities, unlock access to existing assets such as school sites, and invest in the workforce that underpins local provision.
Work with partners to address hyper-local barriers, targeting investment where it is needed most and supporting communities to shape solutions.
Maximise existing assets – from estates to high streets- and remove unnecessary barriers that prevent people from being active.
Why this matters
Without deliberate action, inequalities in physical activity – and the health, social and economic outcomes linked to them – will widen and deepen.
