Sportivate is the £56 million Lottery funded programme giving more young people the chance to discover the right physical activity.

Over 270 projects have received Sportivate funding to help to increase physical activity and sport among children and young people in London. Participants aged 14-25 are introduced to activities where they can learn and develop their skills for six-to-eight weeks and, when the free or low-cost sessions finish, are supported to continue participation.

The latest funding round allocated over £288,000 to 141 projects across all 33 London boroughs. In total, over £688,000 worth of funding was awarded  London in 2017.

So far, over 4100 young participants have attended a Sportivate project and a significant part of them were part of under-represented groups within the sport sector – females (54%), black, asian and minority groups (63%) and deaf and disabled (13%).

London Sport’s Specialist Advisor for Children and Young People, Gary Palmer commented on the success of this round of Sportivate:

“Programmes like Sportivate are vitally important in helping London to get one million people more active. By focusing on young people who were previously inactive, these programmes not only introduce young people to a variety of physical activities but also help to emphasise the importance of having a physical activity habit for life. Healthy, active young people are more likely to become healthy active adults and investment in this area helps to lay foundations for this.”

About Sportivate

Sportivate was created to harness the excitement of London 2012. Sportivate launched in June 2011 as a four-year programme but due to its success, additional funding of £10,000,000 per year was invested, allowing the programme to run until March 2017.

Sportivate funded sessions have helped participants to match up with a local club or venue where they can continue to take part in physical activity and sport. Check out the video below of Shekinah Tae Kwon Do School that exemplifies the purpose of why the Sportivate funding programme exists.
