London Sport creates a new sports club database covering over 6,800 clubs across the capital

25th October 2024

25 October 2024- London, UK: London Sport is excited to announce the creation of a new sports club database as part of the Civic Data Innovation Challenge (CDIC). Using funding from the Greater London Authority (GLA), as well as the non-profit Impact on Urban Health, we have completed a major initiative to map the spread of sports clubs across London.

With our data locating 6,891 sports clubs covering all London boroughs, this project will allow the GLA to incorporate sport and physical activity into their Civic Strength Index.

Key Data Insights:

  • 6,891 sports clubs mapped across London’s boroughs.
  • 72 organisations directly engaged to provide data from their areas.
  • Data gathered from 74 National Governing Bodies, 28 Local Authorities, and 5 strategic partners.

This ambitious project, which involved direct support from 72 organisations, including National Governing Bodies (NGBs), local authorities and strategic partners, is set to play a key role in strengthening community ties and fostering active lifestyles in the capital. This strategic approach eliminated the need to reach out to clubs individually, significantly speeding up the process and ensuring accurate, comprehensive data collection.

The dataset – which provides a detailed snapshot of where sports clubs are located within London, down to ward level – will not only be used as an additional indicator of community strength but will allow local authorities and community groups to better target investment and support where it is most needed.

This information is expected to reinforce future efforts to improve community health and wellbeing by expanding access to sport and represents a major step forward in making sport and physical activity accessible to all Londoners, particularly those in communities where opportunities are currently limited.

Indy Sahota, Engagement Manager (Digital & Tech) at London Sport said:

“On this project, London Sport’s established relationships with key stakeholders helped us source and collate data effectively. By developing strong partnerships, we were able to invite honest feedback on the data we collected and ultimately create an effective database with strong data to ensure maximum engagement. As a result, the data we hold is invaluable and I am very excited to see what we can achieve moving forward!”
