Place At Risk

Protecting the places that keep London moving

Every day, sports facilities, community spaces and places where Londoners can be active face the threat of closure, redevelopment or changes in use. These places can play an important role in the health and wellbeing of their communities, and once they are lost, they can be difficult to replace. The Place at Risk project is designed to help identify these threats earlier and give communities the information they need to respond.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

If you know of a sports or physical activity space that may be at risk, you can report it through our At Risk Place form. We’ll bring together the information you provide with other available data to create a dedicated overview of the site and what may be happening around it. This can include relevant planning applications or development proposals, helping you understand whether there is an immediate issue that requires further investigation.

But a place is more than a building, pitch or piece of land. Our data can also identify sports clubs, community organisations and activity providers nearby that could be affected by its loss. These organisations may be valuable allies in demonstrating how a place is used, the people it serves and the impact its closure or redevelopment could have on opportunities to be physically active locally.

From there, we’ll help you understand what you can do next. This could include verifying a planning application, contacting the organisations that use the site, gathering evidence of its community value, or making a representation during a planning consultation. Where appropriate, we’ll signpost you to the relevant local authority planning service and other routes for raising your concerns.

The aim of Place at Risk is not to determine the outcome of individual planning decisions, but to make it easier for Londoners to spot potential threats, understand the evidence and take informed action. By bringing planning information, local activity data and practical next steps together in one place, we want to give communities a stronger starting point for protecting the places that help London move.
