Meet our Marathon Runners! – Stephen

28th November 2017

Steve is our third entrant to next year’s London Marathon, we caught up to here more about him and his motivations for doing the marathon

I’m Steve and I was born in a little town in NSW, Australia called Inverell. I now live in beautiful Sussex with my wife, son, dog and cat. I moved to England in 2007 and have worked within Sports Development in London and the South East for 10 years. I currently work in the Development and Performance department for the Rugby Football League within the Education sector.

Interests…

Being involved in a variety of sport has always been a major player in my life. It has provided me with many of my friends, is what brought me to this side of the world and most importantly it’s how I met my wife. I’m a massive food, drink and travel lover and love spending time with my family and friends, combining all these is the pinnacle of life!

I have played sport from an early age and have been very lucky to have taken numerous benefits from taking part, which I guess is where my love of it comes from. Rugby League, golf, cricket and football have been my main fields of play and more recently I have taken up running to keep healthy. I’m also very lucky to work in sport and experience the opportunities this brings.

London Marathon

Like a lot of us it I have always had a desire to run in the London Marathon and after entering the ballot for several years and not being successful I thought it was not going to happen. After working in and around London for the last 10 years I thought it might be another way to see the city, hopefully I am right!

Being able to support London Sport with their An Active Inclusive Capital strategy, while at the same time running in the London Marathon is something that I’m very much looking forward to. I’m a big believer that sport has large amounts of benefits and should be available to everyone. To be able to support the recruitment and support of more deaf and disabled people into the workforce and becoming more active is something I’m very excited and proud to be involved in.

My Targets

So, training has started with the goal of trying to increase my fitness to an adequate level before Christmas. After New Year’s I will move into a 16-week training plan that will involve a few official runs and minor goals with the end view on the marathon. I would like to beat 4hr 15mins and reach my charity target of £1800.

Please keep any eye out for our team’s updates and blogs and get behind all 7 runners to help us reach our goals and targets. If you would like to donate any amount please visit My Money Giving Page any support would be very much appreciated!
