The countdown is on: the London Sport Awards are now just a few short weeks away!
With less than a month to go until the big night, we’re focusing in on each of this year’s Award Categories to give you the inside track on each Award and the groups and people that are in the running.
The Harnessing the Power of Elite Sport Award in association with Fieldfisher – Who’s Up For The Award?
The Harnessing the Power of Elite Sport Award in association with Fieldfisher celebrates the events, clubs or organisations that use elite sport’s reach and influence to change lives and inspire people to increased levels of activity.
Here’s the three groups in the running to be named winners of the Harnessing the Power of Elite Sport Award 2019.
BIGKID Foundation
BIGKID Foundation is a youth charity dedicated to seeing no young people lose their lives of potential to youth violence. They work to equip young people at risk of social exclusion to take control of their lives, find, develop and act on their own potential.
In 2018, BIGKID Foundation delivered an American Football Winter Training Programme backed by the NFL and Nike. The Foundation was chosen to host the programme as Efe Obada, a NFL player for the Carolina Panthers, grew up in foster care in Stockwell.
As well as delivering training activities, the programme saw support to young people via video messages from Obada, an end-of-programme combine to help show the development experienced by participants and, for two young people on the programme, the opportunity to travel to the USA to meet Obada in person.
The Foundation will continue to deliver American Football activities, enabling young people to continue to grow their involvement in the sport.
Palace for Life Foundation – PlayMakers
Palace for Life Foundation has been working with the South London community for a quarter of a century. They exist to leverage the power of football and the Crystal Palace FC brand to change the lives of young people across South London. They work with over 13,000 people each year inspiring them to find a better path to lead to a healthier life.
The PlayMakers programme is about tapping into the skills and experience of the Crystal Palace fanbase to help the Foundation improve the lives of young people. It involves working with Palace fans from different career paths and walks of life to provide insight into careers, development and opportunities for young people’s futures.
Saracens Sport Foundation
Saracens Sport Foundation is the charitable arm of Saracens Rugby Club. Working across Hertfordshire and North London, the Foundation works to inspire its communities through the values of sport, physical activity and social opportunities as a catalyst for positive change.
The Foundation runs programmes across a diverse range of themes, including its work with Over 50s, people of all ages with a wide range of disabilities, in-school programmes and action around education and employability.
The charity has been working since 2000 to inspire communities and address specific social needs using its reach and the power of the Saracens brand.
