Celebrating Black History Month: How London Sport is having conversations on race and supporting black-led organisations

15th October 2024

Black History Month is more than just a celebration of the achievements and contributions of Black communities – it’s an opportunity to spark vital conversations about race and the role it plays in our society. For London Sport, Black History Month represents a chance to reinforce our engagement in meaningful dialogue, foster stronger relationships, and reiterate our commitment to anti-racism within the workplace and beyond.

Why Black History Month Matters

Talking about race is important, particularly within the workplace, because it fosters understanding, breaks down barriers, and strengthens inclusivity. At London Sport, we believe that open and honest conversations about race help build trust, rapport, and stronger relationships among colleagues. These discussions also lay the foundation for meaningful change, allowing organisations to better support their anti-racism efforts.

Black History Month serves as a starting point for these essential conversations. It’s a dedicated time to reflect, listen, and learn – both individually and collectively.

Ways to Get Involved During Black History Month

London Sport is encouraging all staff to actively engage with Black History Month through education, collaboration, and support for Black-led organisations. We are:

  1. Learning and sharing knowledge: During Black History Month, staff are encouraged to take time to educate themselves about Black history and share what they’ve learned with others. Whether it’s through articles, documentaries, or books, learning more about the rich heritage of the Black community can be a powerful way to understand the challenges and triumphs they’ve faced.
  2. Attending events: London Sport has published a calendar of events that spotlight the contributions of Black communities and promote awareness of racial equity. Webinars, panel discussions, and community gatherings provide valuable insights and help deepen our understanding of these important issues.
  3. Supporting Black-led organisations: London is home to many Black-led sports and physical activity groups that are making a real impact. We are encouraging staff to promote the visibility of these organisations and consider using their volunteering days to volunteer with a Black-led charity – whether it’s related to sports or any other sector.
  4. Connecting with the Black community in London: Black History Month provides a unique opportunity to deepen connections with Black-led groups across the city. At London Sport, we’re committed to learning from and collaborating with these organisations – not just during this month, but throughout the year.

Building Lasting Connections

London Sport is committed to using Black History Month as a springboard for long-term engagement. Throughout the month, we will be reaching out to Black-led sports and physical activity groups to learn more about their missions, challenges, and successes. Our goal is to connect, collaborate, and foster meaningful partnerships that extend far beyond October.

Importantly, we recognise that our engagement with Black-led organisations cannot be limited to Black History Month. This is part of an ongoing effort to listen to and support underrepresented communities, ensuring that our work continues to uplift and amplify the voices of those who are often overlooked.

Looking Ahead

Black History Month is a reminder of the importance of inclusion, education, and advocacy. At London Sport, we are committed to keeping the conversation going and building lasting relationships with Black communities in the city. Together, we can create a more equitable and inclusive future where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

By using this month as a platform for learning, connection, and action, we can all play a role in supporting the Black community and advancing racial equality in London’s sports and physical activity spaces.
