The power of sport to change lives in London took the stage at Twickenham Stadium this evening (14 March 2019) as the London Sport Awards celebrated grassroots sport in the capital.
On an evening packed with inspirational stories of the impact of physical activity across every corner of the capital, the best of grassroots physical activity and sport were recognised for their efforts of the past 12 months.
Hornbeam Joyriders were named Club of the Year while Haringey Hawks’ basketball coach Franck Batimba picked up Volunteer of the Year.
Disability Sports Coach picked up their first London Sport Award, after being unsuccessful nominees for the previous three years, in the Workforce Award.
Saracens Sport Foundation were awarded the Harnessing the Power of Elite Sport Award with Panathlon Challenge collecting the Children and Young People Award.
In the new category for 2019, Sport Unites Award, Salaam Peace were successful, while Single Homeless Project were named winners in the Physical Activity for Health category.
And Walk With Path collected the Technology for Participation Award for their wearable tech shoes which increase a person’s ability to walk independently.
Danny Bent, Founder of Project Awesome and the I Move London Relay, explained how “tiny little ideas implemented with energy and passion will lead to change for people” in his opening remarks as he spoke about the potential to make London a global springboard for inspirational sporting projects.
And Beth Towle, co-Founder of South London Laces Football Club, spoke powerfully on women and girls’ football and encouraged Londoners to not “be a bystander; if you see something get involved. Even the smallest thing will make a difference.”
