Kennington Oval Reimagined is part of Lambeth Council’s broader initiative to create cleaner, safer, and more child-friendly streets. This project follows the borough’s Climate Action Plan and aligns with the Mayor of London’s Healthy Streets Approach. Its goal is to transform car-dominated streets into people-centred places that promote active travel, play, and community engagement.
The Kennington Oval area was chosen after a borough-wide analysis of deprivation, health inequalities, air quality, and traffic data. Although 68% of households in the area do not own a car, some streets see up to 1,600 vehicle movements per day, with side roads often used as shortcuts. This makes the location ideal for testing a new model of people-friendly urban design.
