The days are ticking away and 14 March is on the horizon, which can only mean one thing: it’s almost time for the London Sport Awards 2019.
With just over a month to go until the big night, we’re focusing in on each of this year’s Award Categories to give you the inside track on each Award and the groups and people that are in the running.
The Workforce Award in association with Lumina Energy – Who’s up for the Award?
The Workforce Award in association with Lumina Energy is designed to recognise the work of organisations, groups and programmes that have used new and creative ways to engage with, develop and support sport’s workforce in London.
Here’s the three groups in the running to take home the Workforce Award on 14 March.
Disability Sports Coach
Disability Sports Coach is a charity which believes that disabled people should be physically active. They create sport and physical activity opportunities that have a positive impact on disabled people’s lives.
In 2018, Disability Sports Coach trained and deployed a workforce comprising 122 coaches and volunteers to help support the delivery and growth of disability sport. 24 coaches and 98 volunteers were integral to supporting disabled Londoners to access over 1678 hours of inclusive activity across 16 London boroughs.
The group’s consistent commitment to developing a more representative workforce ensures that Londoners from differing backgrounds feel comfortable to access sport and physical activity. 24% of Disability Sports Coach’s workforce have a disability, towering above the national average of 6%. This not only encourages positive disabled role models, but ensures a greater understanding of participants’ needs.
London Youth- Active Leads
London Youth is on a mission to improve the lives of young people in London, challenging them to become the best they can. Their vision is for all young Londoners to grow up healthy, able to express themselves, navigate a fulfilling career and make a positive contribution in their communities.
London Youth created Active Leads, a sports focused volunteer and social action initiative to create a stronger culture of female volunteer leadership within community youth organistions, which was backed by 3-year funding from Sport England’s Potentials Fund. The programme worked with six community youth organisations, with two thirds based in the 30% most economically deprived areas of London.
The first year of the programme supported the development of 150 girls and young women aged between 10 and 18, with new volunteers giving on average 52 hours of their time each, and more than 75% coming from a BAME background.
Newham Volunteer Team
Newham Volunteer Team is overseen by Active Newham, a Leisure Trust with charitable status working with and for residents to deliver leisure, sports and volunteering opprotunities in Newham. In 2018, the Newham Volunteer Team placed hundreds of volunteers across a range of events and organisations, ranging from mass participation sports events to grassroots events, community sports clubs and through partnerships with large and small organisations working at every level of community sport.
By providing new opportunities, volunteers are supported to gain new experiences, coaching qualifications, technical skills and life skills which build self-confidence, self-esteem and interpersonal connections.
What Our Sponsors Are Saying
Workforce is a term well-recognised at Lumina Energy as we appreciate that the key to any organisation is a reliable and positive team who are determined to improve and inspire.
Supporting others to achieve a healthier and more active lifestyle is a fantastic way to aid the community, and we love getting involved in sporting events such as charity football matches wherever possible.
We are extremely proud to sponsor the Workforce Award at the London Sport Awards on 14 March 2019 and wish the best of luck to all the shortlisted nominees.
