The days are ticking away and 14 March is on the horizon, which can only mean one thing: it’s almost time for the London Sport Awards 2019.
With less than one month until the big night, and we’re focusing in on each of this year’s Award Categories to give you the inside track on each Award and the groups and people that are in the running.
The Volunteer of the Year Award in association with Davies Sports – Who’s up for the Award?
The Volunteer of the Year Award in association with Davies Sports has been an ever-present at the London Sport Awards and and celebrates those that support grassroots physical activity and sport with their knowledge, passion and skills, giving their time freely for the benefit of everyone.
Here’s the three individuals in the running to take home the Volunteer of the Year Award on 14 March.
Simon Lloyd
Simon provides free athletics coaching to school children in Westminster. He has been a dedicated volunteer for years, and inspires through his volunteering, as well as his personal story.
In 1997, Simon suffered a terrible car crash that resulted in the frontal lobes of his brain being exposed; following his recovery, he now dedicates his life to helping others.
In addition to the work that he does in Westminster, he also visits prisons and referral units to talk about his experiences.
Franck Batimba
Franck runs a community-based organisation, Positive Role Models CIC, which organises projects for young people in Haringey.
One of his projects was setting up a basketball team (Haringey Hawks) to engage young people who were getting into trouble and providing a sporting activity to keep them off the streets.
Franck is not just a coach, but is also mentor to them and working alongside their parents to deliver an enormous impact to the community.
Nahimul Islam
Nahimul has been a volunteer since the age of 13. A decade later, he runs football teams for inactive people, speaks in schools to motivate and inspire young people.
He started with small community tournaments through his youth centre, then went onto creating borough-wide competitions and made sport a priority during his term as the Young Mayor of Tower Hamlets at the age of 15.
He launched the One Borough multi-sport event in 2011 and it has since continued with every Young Mayor, attracting over 500 young people each time.
