Each year our interns work across a range of projects to gain experience of working in sports industry. Take a look below at some of their favourites:
Jennifer Woodrow – Insight Intern
Sitting Netball – I really loved this project because it brought everyone so much joy. The pilot project introduced sitting netball into care home and the response from both the care home residents and workers was overwhelmingly positive. I was heavily involved in the analysis of the project and jointly led its presentation to the Clinical Commissioning Group of Sutton, representatives from England Netball and a couple of the care home workers.
Merton Sports Blast Project Evaluation – I enjoyed working on this project because I got to get out of the office for some fieldwork. This involved doing stakeholder interviews and attending an event to celebrate the success of the project where we got to speak to some of the people who had benefited from the programme. It was interesting to gain an insight into the inner workings of a funded project.
Insight Mentoring – This work made me realise how much knowledge I have of insight and it was very satisfying passing this knowledge on to a club who did not have much knowledge in this area as I could see how much it would benefit them. The level of responsibility I was given to lead on this workshop for external clients shows how great London Sport can be for helping you with your personal development and giving you great opportunities.
Alice Liddle – Project Support Intern
This Girl Can – This project is special to me as I like learning about women’s motivations to take part in physical activity and how to engage women in sport. I worked with our Insight Team to create a focus group to understand coach’s experiences with the resources offered by This Girl Can. It was really fun and insightful.
Physical Activity for Health Network – I’m passionate about promoting physical activity and wellbeing so going quarterly to the Physical Activity for Health Network meetings was a wonderful opportunity for me. These are a change to learn a lot about new health research and what works are undergoing in the Boroughs of London. The other day I went to the MET Police’s safeguarding event, where I found out more about women’s barriers to physical activity.
Sportivate Project – I have been involved in the full process of running the Sportivate project from scoring applications to actually visiting the Sportivate sessions that we have funded. It was a great way of understanding sports funding and which are the criteria for scoring applications.

Andrei Angelescu – Marketing and Communications Intern
House of Sport Branding – One of the highlights of the year for London Sport has been moving the opening to the House of Sport. The interior branding of the building was one of my first projects since starting my placement here. The level of responsibility I was given and the chance to work closely with a creative agency made me feel as a highly valued member of my team.
Pitch Tour of Wembley – One of London Sport’s partners – London Rugby League Foundation invited us to do media coverage for their Rugby League Summer Festival. It was wonderful to see children having fun while playing together and we were lucky enough to do a pitch tour of Wembley Stadium with the full stands!
Sport Tech Hub – This year London Sport launched the first dedicated physical activity and sport incubator in London. Getting the chance to plan and support the development of the branding and marketing strategy for the Sport Tech Hub was a fantastic opportunity for me to put to the test the knowledge I acquired during my studies.
Ashley Mainwaring – Project Support Intern
Sportivate – This was my first ever project at London Sport. It helped allocate funding to clubs in order to run activities to encourage children to engage in physical activity. This involved me collecting and assessing multiple applications, creating and distributing bank account forms to successful applicants and monitoring club delivery of the projects. It has highly improved my project management skills and I got the chance to attend some of the sessions funded by London Sport. The impact of London Sport’s work made a huge impact for the clubs!
The Schools Suppliers Hub – This was one of my favourite projects. The hub is an online platform where suppliers can list their services allowing teachers to connect with them. I enjoyed working on this as I was involved in reviewing and testing the website in the early stages of development, allowing me to give suggestions for the look and design of the site. It was great to be so involved in a brand-new platform and gave me the opportunity to connect with different organisations in the sport sector.
Intern recruitment – This is a great opportunity to lead and manage a project from start to end. I am responsible for the communication between Colleges and Universities regarding the roles, as well as reviewing the promotional material and adverts for the recruitment campaign alongside Andrei. I am looking forward to shortlisting and interviewing applicants which will hopefully give me a good insight into what makes good and bad interviews.
